Your home. Your choice. Your care.

While the recent celebrity deaths have caught national media attention, Boston Senior Home Care remembers a long-time volunteer who was a celebrity to them: Jack Peckham.

In 1996, Jack came to Boston Senior Home Care through the City sponsored Senior Companion Program. He fit in immediately and became friends with many of the staff and others. He is best described by his wonderful friend and fellow volunteer, Doris Jones, who stated: “Jack was a man of integrity, great character and dignity. He worked un-selfishly and tirelessly with quiet resolve to plant the seed of friendship through showers of kindness love and warmth, be it through thought, word, or, deed.” Jack often supplied the staff with candy and multiple newspapers, Metro, Globe, and Herald, to insure that all were aware of the progress of the Red Sox and Celtics.

Jack was a kind and dedicated man and believed in his volunteer work. He conducted telephone reassurance calls, visited clients, escorted them to appointments and was loved by all of his consumers and the Boston Senior Home Care staff. Day after day, Jack called his clients to check in on them. He considered Boston Senior Home Care his family and the feelings were reciprocated. When Jack turned 65, Boston Senior Home Care threw Jack a party and he said “age is a state of mind and I don’t mind”. He was so pleased to be remembered. As Jack’s health declined over the years, Boston Senior Home Care was happy to help him and Jack had just moved into elderly housing in Charlestown when he became ill and died unrepentantly.

He touched the lives of many while at Boston Senior Home Care and his presence is still felt. He was not a celebrity; there will not be buildings named for him or monuments erected. But when looking at Jack Peckham’s life, it is clear that he gave a lot of love, kindness, and joy back to his community. He may not have played for the Red Sox, but he truly hit one out of the park.
